¹ Lichen is an extremely adaptive organism that is able to grow in many environmental conditions on almost any surfaces. Lichen has a very slow growth rate of less than a millimeter per year and considered to be among the oldest living organisms. It is estimated that almost 6% of Earth's land surface from arctic tundra to deserts and toxic environments is covered in lichen. They are not considered as parasites, but instead use the plants, rock and other surfaces as a substrate.
