JUSTINA VILČINSKAITĖ

Justina Vilčinskaitė (Vilnius, LT) is an artist working in the field of visual art and design. She works primarily with sculptural installation as well as video and photography. Her main interest lies in mythology, collections/collecting, natural elements, such as rocks and their cultural and symbolic associations.

In her work she researches and plays with oppositions, the mental and physical heaviness and lightness. She explores the dialectics of the myth of Sisyphus, its notions of hopelessness, meaningless repetition, the idea of a burden and superstitious meaning of luck and hope associated with a collection of stones with naturally occurring holes in them. The investigation manifests itself through sculptural correspondence with the mythical character Sisyphus, as an absurd attempt to change and eliminate one’s mental and physical burden. Sculptural letters, shipping crates, and packages emphasize the state of transition and in-betweenness.
